Dogs, Sweet Moments, Home Improvements/Repair

I'm sick of dogs! I love 'em but they've got to get out. Our fence is broken, which allowed Lily to have her little adventure a few weeks ago, and so our dogs have become mostly indoor dogs. All they do is scratch and lick, lick and scratch. It drives me nuts! And as I sit here typing this, Lily has released one of the most foul smelling things I have ever smelled.

Then, this morning, I decide to open our windows since is was a beautiful and cool morning and our house smells like bulldog. What do I immediately hear? The two pitbulls down the street having a barking contest. Did their owners come out and tell them to 'shut up'? No. Did I? Yes. Did they? No. It was 7:30... people are trying to sleep. We have three dogs and are able to keep them pretty much under control but I guess that is easy when they get to stay in the house all the time. Ugh!

Good news... today we are putting up a new fence whenever Casey gets back from an unexpected trip to the golf course. Isn't it lovely how guys can have plans that suddenly come up and just be able to go? I don't know many women, especially mom's that can do that. Maybe its just me. By the way, I'm not the least bit cranky today. :)

Last night, I had my first sweet moment with my two boys. Dylan asks me every night to lay with him until he goes to sleep. I always tell him "not tonight" like a bad mom but a) I don't want to make a habit of it and b) I am either busy trying to straighten the house up b/c of the dogs or I am on my way to bed. However, I gave in last night. While we were lying there, Deacon decided to start kicking up a storm. I asked DT if he'd like to feel his little brother moving. So he gave me his hand and I put it on the most active part of my belly. It wasn't hard for DT to feel Deacon moving. Of course, he thought it was really neat but I thought it was pretty incredible. It was just a perfect moment. It was peaceful and quiet and my boys had their first interaction with each other. Before now, Dylan hadn't really gotten to feel the baby moving b/c he always stops whenever someone puts their hand on my belly.

Besides putting up a new fence, converting the man room into Dylan's new room and updating the nursery a little, Casey and I have decided that we would love to replace our dog infested carpet with wood floors. I've always loved them but preferred carpet with kids around. For some reason, the last two weeks have changed my mind. We are hoping to find a good deal with a one year same as cash plan and do it as our Christmas present to each other this year. It would really help to update the house and make it look so much better. We would just start out with the living room and hallway but would eventually like to do the kitchen and maybe the rest of the house.

A few questions:
1) Which is easier to clean: carpet or hardwood?
2) What is the easiest way to clean hardwood floors?
3) Which do you prefer?

Jen, I know that you can help me with this one. :)

Did I mention that our dryer went out on us last weekend and that we still have to get Rocky his $650 surgery done? Seriously, I'm thinking the home improvement thing is just a pipe dream.

Well, I'm gonna go take a shower now and then, maybe some oreos and milk will brighten my day a little more. It's really not that bad but today is my day off and the first day I've had a chance to stop and think about all the little annoyances and they added up quick.

I may post a new baby bump pic later and one of Deacon's bedding. I can't get one of my camera's photo cards to import my pictures onto my computer. :P

Okay, first off---Chris laughed and laughed over the "cleaning the floors/carpet" comment directed at me. That wasn't very nice of him.

Be aware that hardwood floors are much louder than carpet. Think of boys, dogs and their toenails, etc. Dustbunnies also make appearances. However, they sure do look nice, don't they?

I'm really enjoying the carpet at the new house.

Love this entry. You rock. I miss you.

aww.. that wasn't very nice.

I've been thinking about the noise level too. I keep thinking I'll just buy rugs to put down but then that's almost like having carpet again. I'm so torn.

Miss you guys too. I'm ready for things to settle down and they are... slowly but surely.

I think hardwood floors are beautiful but I with Jen....they are noisy! Mrs. Culver had hardwood in that house of hers and when everybody got together (when the guys were young) the noise was deafening! I LOVE carpet. It is warm and cozy and keeps down the noise. Just buy dirty brown shag carpet, that way nothing will show on it.

By the way....THANKS for the ribs.

Okay, I'm going to vote for engineered hardwood laminate or whatever it's called. REAL hardwood is nice but the price is through the roof. Plus, sometimes the fake stuff is a little more durable and easier to clean (ie: you can use whatever chemical you want because it's not "really" wood). Half our house has laminate and the rest of it has this really expensive wool carpet that does not clean up well AT ALL. (Seriously, we're two steps--maybe one-and-a-half--away from pending litagation!) I think we will end up with matching wood laminate in the hall (it's not the best but it's what we can afford) and a really cheap plush in the bedrooms. Quite honestly, it's been our experience that a cheap plush cleans up the best, especially if the weave is tight. Liquids just sit there for a little while instead of immediately soaking in. I guess it all depends on what you are trying to clean up. If you want to be able to hide the everday dirt and dust then carpet is better BUT if you are looking for the ability to clean up dog vomit and piss (er, urine) then you cannot beat the durability of some sort of hard floor. Technically we don't have laminate in half the house because our kitchen/dine-in area has huge travertine tile, which I also don't recommend. You can email me if you want to hear more of my opinions on flooring. Seriously, we've tried it all! Good luck with everything!
